Coordinated border management: the case of the Cristo Redentor System

Abstract

his study aims to identify the model of the Coordinated Border Management in which chilean border custom interacts, focused on "Cristo Redentor" border cross in order to recognize achievements and challenges of customs in the development of this model. A qualitative methodology approach was used, which considers elements of "teaching case" and study case of exploratory research. This border cross has model of decentralized management, that has been in continuous construction since 1984 and, since 2001, has been strengthened by the creation of the Integrated Control Areas, which together with the "Cristo Redentor" Integration Committee, representing the existing institutional framework. Also, regarding the relations of cooperation, this study founded a strong link between Chile and Argentina border customs, but also the existence of negative inter-institutional relationships between the security agencies with this customs.
