This article presents a systematic review of the main gender-sensitive policies and regulatory frameworks in Brazil, focusing particularly on education (primary and higher) and on the promotion of women’s participation in academia (as teaching staff and/or scientific researchers). First, it addresses the participation of women in the democratization of Brazil and in the formulation of the 1988 Constitution. Second, it discusses the measures for gender equality implemented in the nineties, when the Brazilian federal government put into effect several international treaties based on human rights. Third, it analyzes the period 2003-2016, characterized by greater investment in gender policies; and fourth, it reviews the shift to the extreme right (2018-2022). The final section offers the conclusions of the study.
